Perhaps some combination of the lowlight and cropping gave you a noisy and soft image on this one. In preparation for the portrait assignment, you should take your subject by a window and allow light to flood into the face.
The second image seems washed out and low resolution. Are you using a digital zoom? There's almost no detail left in the the weeds, the color balance is off and the upper left corner's too bright.
